1. Your Story (30 pts.)
          A Write your life story to include where you are from, your family, why you chose Taylor University and this major, what you would like to do for a career,and any other pertinent information about yourself. (20 pts.)
          B. Share your story with the group (10 pts.)
 2. Interview (50 pts.)
          A. Interview a professional who works in the field of sport management to get insights on the field in general and their positions in particular. You need to develop good questions to ask them that would be questions that others in your major may want to know the answers to.
          B. Write a paper (40 pts.) on the information you received from the interviews AND give an oral report (10 pts.) to the others in your group.
3. Sport Management Careers (50 pts.)
          A. Research 3 sport management career options to determine the job descriptions, what qualifications a person needs to get these positions, what the salary ranges are, and other information that you think is pertinent for a sport management major to know.
          B. Find three (3) websites for job listings for the sport management profession.
          C. Write a paper (40 pts.) on the information you received from your research,list the three (3) websites,AND give an oral report (10 pts.) to the others in your group.
4.  Article Review (100 pts.)
          A. From a professional journal, read an article about a research study in sport
          B.  Write a 2-3 page paper (90 pts.) on the article. Include at least the following:
1)      The reference for the article in American Psychological Association (APA) format.
2)      The title of the study
3)      The purpose of the study
4)      The hypothesis(es) of the study, if given
5)      Procedures
6)      Results/Conclusion
7)      A reaction to the study 
a. relate it or compare it to the content covered in class or what you have learned in other classes or from experience.

          C. Give an oral report to the class on your research. (10 pts.)
5. Book Discussion (80 pts.)
          A. Read the assigned book.
          B. Complete the assignment given for each discussion class on the book.
          C. Participate in the class discussion on the book. (10 pts. per class period)
6. Philosophy of Sport (50 pts.)
A. Write your philosophy of sport. Include what you think the purpose of sport is,
     why sport is important (what value it has to society), how it should be played,
     and your philosophy of competition. Add any other ideas about your philosophy.
7.  Critical Thinking (44 pts)
          A. Define critical thinking (CT).
          B. Differentiate between CT skills and CT dispositions.
          C. Define metacognition.
          D. For each of the five (5) CT skills covered in this course:
                    1) Define each CT skill
                    2) Explain how and for what purpose(s) you have used or would use each skill either in this course or in another course or in your out of class experiences.

Goals of the Library Session

By the end of this class session you should be able to:

  • Define a [library] database and understand how it is different from free web search engines: Google/Google Scholar.
  • Examine the content and searching capabilities of specific databases relevant to research in sport management-- examples will be given from Sport Discus.
  • Identify periodical titles that Zondervan Library owns or has access to online (full-text) using Journal Finder.
  • Understand the basic theory of search strategies that provide the best results; examine and explore those strategies with specific practice. You should know the basics of widening and narrowing a search using Boolean operators, thesaurus for Sport Discus) as well as employing faceted searching and limiters.
  • Examine criteria for evaluating the fields within a citation as information to determine usefulness.

Comparing Subject Databases with Google, Google Scholar

There are several things to consider when looking at a subject database: Scope, Access, Content, Authorship/Editorial Control, Indexing and Organization, and Reliability. A table that compares Google, Google Scholar and generic subject databases (such as Sport Discus, Business Source Premier) will be provided in class that examines each of these features.
